Academic advising, meals, mental health services. Now, of course programs across the country have better facilities, they travel better, and have more coaches. That’s a pretty concrete description of how it got better while I was there.

We had communal showers, we didn’t get pregame meals or any food really to speak of until maybe my fourth year.īy that point, most of the team was getting full or partial aid. We didn’t even have a carpet on the locker room floor, it was a concrete floor. The locker room left a lot to be desired. My coach had one assistant, so we had a two-person coaching staff. The men had a charter plane, but we went everywhere on buses. For me, anecdotally, we didn’t fly to games.

We have seen an upgrade in the quality of the experience. That’s a visible indicator of participation opportunities. Sports have expanded, there are more roster spots, and there are more offerings across the board at schools across the country. It was embryonic, women’s sports were just on the ground floor. When I was at UVA, there were only a handful of women’s teams. Participation numbers have skyrocketed since. That would not happen without Title IX, I’m certain.

I’m sure I got a lift from basketball, and on top of it all, I got it paid for. Title IX directly affected me because playing sports likely got me into UVA when I otherwise might not have. Then my second year I got upgraded to a full scholarship at UVA, and that’s how I finished, on a full ride. The men’s team had a full load, we had one. There was only one scholarship and I got part of it. That partial scholarship my first year represented part of the only scholarship for the women’s basketball team in my first year at Virginia. And I chose Virginia because it was the one closest to my home in New Jersey. Carolina had money but I didn’t make the cut for a scholarship they said you could probably make the team, but we don’t have any aid for you. I got offered partial scholarships by Duke and Virginia. I just wanted to go south, and I think I’d heard of the Atlantic Coast Conference, it sounded pretty cool, and I wanted to play basketball. The four schools I applied to were Duke, North Carolina, Virginia and Wake Forest. And it directly affected me because I was able to go to college on a basketball scholarship. As a three-sport athlete, I assumed Title IX had something to do with that when I finally got to high school in the fall of 1973.
